250MX class sees Ferrandis comfortably quickest in practice.
450MX rookie Chase Sexton has qualified quickest on debut with Team Honda HRC at Loretta Lynn’s opening round of 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross, as Dylan Ferrandis topped the 250MX times.
Sexton stunned in drying conditions by setting the benchmark of 1m58.840s on his second lap to lead Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM) and Zach Osborne (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna).
Webb had been over three seconds faster than the field in the opening outing earlier, but Sexton stepped up when it counted as conditions improved and, in the end, he was ahead by eight-tenths.
Another premier class rookie, Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) was fourth and the last rider beneath the 2m00s bracket, followed by Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) in filling the top five.
Sixth to 10th positions featured Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) on return from injury, defending champion Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) after he was caught in the mud for part of the practice, Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), Joey Savatgy (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki), also back, and Christian Craig (Team Honda HRC).
In 250MX, Monster Energy Star Yamaha’s Ferrandis posted a 2m00.222s to place him almost three seconds clear of the chasing pack.
The Frenchman led Jeremy Martin (Geico Honda) in second place on the time-sheets, who was directly ahead of opening session pace-setter Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha).
Australian teenager Jett Lawrence (Geico Honda) displayed his strengths outdoors in P4, as Alex Martin (Yoshimura JGRMX Suzuki) completed the top five.
Positions six through 10 included RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) on return from knee surgery, Carson Mumford (Geico Honda), Shane McElrath (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha), debutant Dylan Schwartz (Barx Chaparral Suzuki) and Hunter Lawrence (Geico Honda).
The gates will drop on moto one at the famed Loretta Lynn’s Ranch with 250MX scheduled for 1:15pm local time.
