Fused vertebrae the result of scare in St. Louis Supercross.
Phoenix Racing Honda rider Kyle Peters is on the road to recovery after undergoing successful spinal surgery to stabilize serious injuries sustained in St. Louis last weekend.
The reigning three-time AMA Arenacross champion experienced tingling and numbness after breaking several vertebrae in the 250SX East main event, but avoided major spinal cord damage.
“As most people know, I had a pretty scary crash Saturday night in St. Louis, which resulted in breaking my C5 and C6 vertebrae in my neck,” Peters explained. “On the track I felt tingling and numbness in my arm and knew something wasn’t right – [the] Alpinestars medical team did an amazing job of stabilizing my neck for transportation to the hospital.
“X-rays showed the broken vertebrae were pushing on my spinal cord and on Sunday I had surgery. They fused C5 and C6, along with rods and screws from C4 and C7. I’m feeling better each day and planning on going home [Friday].
“I wanted to give a huge thank you to the medical crew for knowing exactly what to do and to make sure everything was stable before moving me. Also my family for being here by my side in the hospital, my team for all of their support and just everyone that has reached out with texts and calls. It means a lot and I appreciate all of you guys!”
Peters has endured a trying Monster Energy Supercross campaign in 2022, his best result of eight coming in Arlington – his lone top 10 of the season. A major crash at Daytona saw him break his hand and ribs, sidelining him for Detroit and Indianapolis, before returning in St. Louis.
