With a maximum of 50 points up for grabs in the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross championship, 450SX points leader Cooper Webb has the opportunity to clinch the title this weekend in Salt Lake City, Ricky Carmichael shared his thoughts on what we might see Saturday night in a recent SX preview show.

Webb’s win over rival Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) in the final round of the Atlanta Motor Speedway residency, put him 16-points ahead as the series dwindles down to two rounds.

Now with one hand seemingly on the championship trophy, Webb has the opportunity to clinch the championship this weekend if he walks away with a points lead of 26 or more.

Therefore, if Roczen finishes further back than 12th place, a third or better he’s the 2021 450SX champion. However, if Roczen finishes inside the top six, Webb cannot clinch the title, pushing it to the final round.

Five-time Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael shared his thoughts on the current state of the championship, knowing it’s certainly possible to clinch this weekend in Salt Lake.

“Anything is possible we’ve seen it, there was a swing where Ken Roczen made up nine points in Atlanta. So who’s to say that Cooper Webb can’t make up 10 points here Saturday night. But that’s why we tune in and that’s what’s been so exciting and exhilarating about this season no doubt about it.”

“It’s certainly possible,” Carmichael said, “I think with being back in the stadium, it is going to suit Cooper Webb’s style and what he’s all about. Clearly, he was struggling in Atlanta, so I think momentum’s on his side, especially coming off of that win.”

When asked what he’d do if he were in Webb’s shoes, the five-time champ pointed out that you can only control what you can control in racing.

“You can’t control what Ken’s going to do for the most part. You go out, you execute, get good starts, do the same thing you’ve been doing all season long. You play the long game at this point.

“Then if you see yourself out in front and things start looking like it’s going to happen and you’re going to win the championship, then you just gotta stay focused and let everything else that’s going to happen, let happen behind you.

“Because if you’re out in the lead, you can’t control what’s happening behind you. So it’s big picture and if it happens, great, if not, then it goes on to the final round.”
