Latest step in ClubMX rider's career results in 250SX West podium.
The drama-filled Arlington Triple Crown marked a career-best finish for Muc-Off FXR ClubMX Yamaha’s Coty Schock, as the Delaware native’s 2-4-6 scorecard earned him P2 overall for the night in 250SX West, splitting Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Haiden Deegan and Michael Mosiman on the podium. The 27-year-old details his night in this Conversation interview.
Coty, congrats on your first podium. You are with this ClubMX team, it’s a privateer Yamaha team, but that’s such a solid program. Did you kind of know going there that you were going to be a podium guy?
Yeah, for sure. I mean, when I was on previous teams, I always looked at Club and I was like, ‘Dang, they got a solid platform going on and they want to win.’ When I got dumped from the previous team and I had to go searching, honestly, [ClubMX] is where I wanted to go, so I went there first, showed up on my two-stroke one day and Mike [Bonacci] gave me the opportunity. He was like, ‘Hey, come into the office and have a conversation’, and ever since then, it’s kind of changed my life in a way – that’s a solid group of guys with that whole crew. Yeah, we’re not a factory team, but it’s all good, they put in the work and we’re still figuring things out. We’re proving that it works, right? In previous years, they’ve had Jeremy Martin on it and Phil [Nicoletti] and Garrett [Marchbanks]… They’ve put in some solid results over the years and it’s been proven, so for me to sign with these guys, it’s like, ‘Okay, I know they see something in me before I even see it in myself,’ and I feel like that’s been my biggest struggle this year is just, you know, like I believe in myself, but how much, right? So just trying to take it to that next step, and yeah, I mean, we got P2 on a night. It’s pretty sick, it’s good for me and good for the team.
Does this open the floodgates now?
I don’t know, maybe. It feels good, so I want more of it.
How much more do you feel like you have in the tank?
I don’t know. You and I will both find out. I always knew I could ride a motorcycle well, but I never really had the structure growing up, but I’ve really locked down these last few years, and I’ve checked off everything that I’ve ever wanted to accomplish, right? So now I’m making new goals, and I’ve gotten this far, so how far can I really go? That’s just where I’m going to leave it. So yeah, it’s pretty cool what I’m doing, I’m living my dream, I’ll admit that. I just want to keep going and see how far we can go at the end of the day, because being from Delaware, nobody’s done anything from Delaware… right? Nobody even knows that Delaware is a state, let’s be honest. There’s two motorcycle dealerships, I think, and nobody really knows what moto is, so I come from a place where it’s not really meant to be, and yeah, I’m having a blast, so it’s pretty cool.
What was your initial game-plan going into the race, and how did that evolve as the laps progressed?
For myself, I felt like I sucked in Glendale, and I really sucked at my starts. I was riding well, but my overall was not ideal, so yeah, new weekend, new opportunity, and yeah, I just wanted to be better than the previous round.
All the people that are closest to you, I’m sure, are celebrating just as much as you are. So have you been able to talk to your dad yet? What has he said? Has your mom called or texted you at all?
Everyone’s just stoked, it’s a dream come true in a way. For me, my next personal best is a win, so that’s pretty cool to say. Everything’s going pretty well, I’m riding well, but I still can be bette, and there’s more to come, so just got to be patient and just not rush it.
Another weekend off next week for you guys. If you had a bad night tonight, it’s probably a good thing. But after such a good night here, you would like to carry that momentum, I would assume? Talk about now going right back to having another weekend off.
Oh, I don’t have a weekend off, you’ll see me in the 450 class next weekend at Daytona on my 250. I can’t miss Daytona, I love it. No expectations, just want to go have fun, throw it out with the boys, throw some whips, maybe do a burnout just because I finished a race. I don’t know.
If someone told you five years ago that you’re going to progress this far, you’re going to get a podium, would you have believed them?
Probably not, no. I mean, I was squirrely back in the day and I still have moments nowadays. But if anything, for me, being the fastest in two of the motos in the whoops in Glendale was a huge accomplishment because 2020, me in the whoops, yeah, no, there’s a photo of me three whoops in and there’s the bike going, I’m stuck in between each whoop. So we’ve come a long way, it’s crazy. I mean, with this Muc-Off FXR Club MX team, they’ve taken me to a whole other level, and to get P2 on a night with my mechanic being a veteran in the military appreciation, it’s almost an honor to do it for him too. So yeah, I know I would be laughing in your face if you told me five years ago that I’d be in this position right now.
