The extent of Chase Sexton’s injuries have been revealed after his contact with Justin Barcia in Las Vegas, which forced him out of representing Team USA in the 2024 Motocross of Nations (MXoN).

Reigning national 450MX champion Sexton’s chances of capturing the SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX) trophy ended on lap one of the opening moto at the SMX Final.

With Eli Tomac being named as his replacement as the American effort’s MXGP entry for Matterley Basin on October 4-6, KTM has now moved to confirm that it is back and shoulder pain from the impact with Barcia – ultimately a racing incident – that will sideline him from the international event. A bone contusion to his right hand also means he wouldn’t be at 100 percent fitness.

“Obviously it’s really disappointing to have my season end the way it did in Las Vegas,” Sexton explained. “I’m especially disappointed that I am not going to be able to compete at this year’s MXoN. There’s no greater honor than representing your country on the world stage and it’s a role that I take seriously

“Unfortunately my body is pretty banged up right now and I have a bone contusion in my right hand that is going to limit my ability to perform at my best next week. Team USA deserves nothing but the best, healthiest three athletes on the team and unfortunately that’s just not me right now.”

The addition of Tomac sees him join Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing teammate Cooper Webb (MX2) – already a replacement rider as he steps in for Chance Hymas – and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Aaron Plessinger (Open), who will represent Team USA for the second year in a row.
