Wild second moto sees new moto winner and an extended championship lead for Deegan.
Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Haiden Deegan fought back from crashing while leading the second moto to win the Southwick National with 1-2 scores on the day. The victory was Deegan’s fourth on the season has he extended his championship lead in the process.
Deegan cruised to the first moto win and was in the lead of the second moto when he crashed right in front of Red Bull KTM’s Tom Vialle. Team Honda HRC’s Jo Shimoda charged up and passed Vialle to take the moto win while Deegan picked himself up in P8 and was able to get all the way back to second to secure the overall.
It was a frustrating P2 overall for Vialle who crashed late in the second moto while battling for the win and settled with 2-3 scores. Shimoda’s second moto victory propelled him onto the podium after he came back from a first turn crash in the first moto to finish P9.
Putting another top four performance together was Shimoda’s teammate Chance Hymas who went 3-5 for fourth. Hymas has yet to finish outside of the top five in any moto this season and narrowly remained second in the championship with his rides on Saturday. Star Racing’s Jordon Smith rounded out the top five with a quiet 7-4 day for his best result of the season.
Behind them, it was Triumph Racing’s Joey Savatgy in sixth, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Levi Kitchen in seventh, his teammate Ty Masterpool in eighth, Troy Lee Designs Red Bull GasGas’ Pierce Brown in ninth, and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Casey Cochran in 10th.
Deegan now leads the championship by 42 points over Hymas as the series heads to RedBud next week for the mid-point of the championship.
