Comeback ride from dead last secured the win for the KTM rider.
In one of the most extraordinary rides in AMA Pro Motocross, Chase Sexton earned a 1-1 performance to win the Hangtown National after crashing at the start of the second moto and coming from dead last to first place on the final lap. The emotional victory for Sexton secured him his first win in Pro Motocross with Red Bull KTM, and the red plate as well.
The 450 class motos started with Jett Lawrence grabbing the holeshot and looking to keep the streak of 24 straight moto wins alive one further. But suddenly, the Australian crashed heavily on the downhill on the first lap and remounted well behind the field. He was only able to finish 24th in the opening moto, meaning he scored zero points.
The door was flung wide open for the rest of the field and Chase Sexton took advantage. He won the first moto by passing Jason Anderson and then Hunter Lawrence late in the moto to take the win. But the second moto was a ride for the ages as Sexton caught and passed teammate Aaron Plessinger with three turns to go to secure the sweep.
Hunter Lawrence picked up second overall on the day with 2-4 scores and dropped to eight points behind Sexton in the standings. Plessinger rounded out the podium with a 5-2 performance as he just narrowly missed his first 450 class moto win of his career.
Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Justin Cooper finished up P4 with 4-3 scores just ahead of Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson who compiled 3-5 results. It was certainly a day of ups and downs all around the field aside from Sexton.
Behind them, Dylan Ferrandis (Phoenix Racing Honda) finished up sixth, Justin Barcia (Troy Lee Designs Red Bull GasGas) was seventh, Malcolm Stewart (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) was eighth, Freddie Noren (Madd Parts Kawasaki) was ninth, and Christian Craig (Rockstar Husqvarna) rounded out the top 10.
Jett Lawrence ended up 12th with 24-6 scores and is said to have a gash in his hip from the first moto. Time will tell how much he will be able to recover for the Thunder Valley next week, but he dropped to sixth in the standings in the process. Now it’s Sexton who’s in control of the series after two rounds.
