For the first time in nearly a year, Eli Tomac is a race winner once more.
Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac is a winner again in Monster Energy Supercross as the multi-time champion picked up his first win of 2024 at the St. Louis Triple Crown on Saturday night. The 52nd win of Tomac’s career delighted the Missouri crowd as Tomac became the sixth different rider to win in the 450SX class this year.
Tomac claimed victory with what will be classified as a 1-1-1 sweep. Although he crossed the line behind Jett Lawrence in Race 2, Lawrence was deemed to have jumped on a red cross flag and thus the win was awarded to Tomac. Thanks to the mixed bag of results caused by Jett Lawrence along with Chase Sexton, Cooper Webb, Jason Anderson, and Aaron Plessinger all being penalized for jumping on a red cross flag, it made the whole night look rather dominating for Tomac.
Cooper Webb finished second overall with 5-6-2 scores and crucially gained points on Jett Lawrence in the championship again after Lawrence had a big crash with Justin Barcia in the third race. Webb was joined on the podium by Honda HRC’s Hunter Lawrence for what was the elder Lawrence’s first career podium in the 450SX class.
Red Bull KTM teammates Aaron Plessinger (fourth) and Chase Sexton (fifth) would round out the top five on the night. Sexton did gain a few points on Lawrence in the title hunt but lost a big chunk of points to Cooper Webb in the process.
Justin Barcia ended up sixth overall with 6-4-10 scores and immediately apologized to Jett Lawrence after the race for the heavy contact. Malcolm Stewart (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) was seventh overall ahead of Jett Lawrence in eighth, Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing) in ninth, and Shane McElrath (Twisted Tea Progressive Suzuki) rounding out the top 10.
Jett Lawrence still holds onto the points lead by eight points over Cooper Webb now as the series heads into its’ second and final break before the five race spring the the finish in April and May. Eli Tomac jumped to fourth in the standings with his win, but sits a distant 29 points back in the championship fight.
