Seewer rises for first MXGP overall of the year in France

Strong day for Yamaha with Benistant MX2 win at Villars sous Ecot.

Monster Energy Yamaha’s Jeremy Seewer claimed his first overall victory of the season at the MXGP World Championship round in France on Sunday, as Thibault Benistant’s consistency helped him secure the MX2 overall win.

The qualifying race on Saturday was won by MXGP championship leader Jorge Prado (Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing), before on Sunday, impressive 1-2 results for Seewer lead to him standing on the top step of the Villars sous Ecot podium.

The Swiss rider was joined by Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre he finished third in the opening moto, before going on to win moto two ahead of Seewer. Rounding out the podium was red plate-holder and Jorge Prado, who’s 4-3 scorecard was enough to see him extend his championship lead over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings to 24 points after technical issues in moto two lead to a DNF for the five-time world champion.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2’s Benistant’s 1-2 scorecard at the seventh round was enough to secure to overall win, as the Frenchman and the rest of the MX2 field benefitted from the absence of championship leader Jago Geerts after the Belgian crashed out of the qualifying race on Saturday and was unable to line up for the two motos on Sunday.

Benistant was joined on the podium by the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo of Andrea Adamo and Liam Everts, who tied for points after the two motos, with the better second moto handing the position to Adamo, who now sits a single point behind Geerts in the championship standings. The series will be on track again in Latvia on 4 June, at Kegums.
