Multi-time champion provides update following treatment.
A decision on the racing future of Eli Tomac will be made in ‘a month or two’ the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider has suggested in an update post-treatment on his season-ending ruptured Achilles tendon.
Tomac, 30, was champion-elect to win a third-career 450SX crown at his home round in Colorado, but instead was forced to exit the race after he sustained the injury that has brought an end to his season altogether.
Amidst heavy anticipation that the conclusion of the 2023 Supercross season would spell the end of his illustrious career, Tomac announced a contract extension in late February this year to continue with Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing through the entire current SuperMotocross World Championship. However, the significant injury sustained in Denver has stirred speculation that Tomac will now draw a close to his racing career.
“Sunday, I was able to get my Achilles all tuned up and fixed at the Vail, Steadman Clinic,” Tomac said. “I was very thankful to get in there right away and get this thing on the road to recovery.
“Basically at a loss of words right now for what happened, in my mind it was just a freak deal and I racing situation. When I look back I barely overjumped that tabletop, and I was just standing into that ramp, and I guess the high G load was just too much for my Achilles there, don’t know, I’ve overjumped plenty of other different jumps just as hard if not harder and I’ve been fine.
“I guess this stuff happens with racing. It’s very unfortunate to lose it this way, but myself and the Star Racing Yamaha team have so much to hold our heads high with.
“One thing is for sure, I’m not going to make any decisions on my future right now. That will come maybe a month or two down the road on whether I go racing again or what happens. I’m just going to focus on getting healthy.”
Prior to the injury, Tomac was leading the main event in Denver and entered the penultimate round with an 18-point lead ahead of Chase Sexton (Team Honda HRC).
Since joining Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing in 2022, Tomac won last year’s 450SX and 450MX titles, and was a part of Team USA’s victory at the most recent Motocross of Nations (MXoN). Additionally, he won seven rounds in this year’s Monster Energy Supercross Championship.
