Two-time champion now leads by a single point following Indy.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Cooper Webb has been a model of consistency across recent Supercross rounds, securing his fifth-straight podium to take possession of the 450SX red plate in Indianapolis.
While his closest rivals Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing) and Chase Sexton (Team Honda HRC) endured an offnight, Webb rode a smart and calculated main event to finish third in what were challenging conditions at round nine.
“To get the red plate is a great accomplishment,” stated Webb. “Obviously it’s still tight, but it was a great night for the overall points battle. I’m a little disappointed, I felt like I was in the mix and didn’t execute, so yeah a little bummed.
“But, it’s a long season and like everyone keeps saying, the track was so tough that it was one of those risk versus reward deals, you could easily make mistakes, so you had to be very technically on point tonight. Overall, we’ll take it and move on to the next.”
The result in Indy marks Webb’s seventh podium in nine races, and in terms of the title-race, both he and Tomac have emerged as clear favourites with 202 and 201 points respectively, while Sexton is still in the hunt only 13 points back from the red plate.
