Now a 50 percent chance of a post-season competitive showing.
Six rounds into Supercross 2023, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac has shifted his perspective about racing on in the SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX) post-season, revealing the ‘odds are getting better’ for a playoffs appearance.
Prior to gate-drop at Anaheim 1, 30-year-old Tomac said it was unlikely he would compete for the inaugural SMX crown and at that point it didn’t appear that he would compete beyond the 450SX series this year.
While nothing further has been officially confirmed, the reigning Monster Energy Supercross and Pro Motocross champion’s latest update provides a spark of hope regarding his competitive continuation come September.
“I’ll say right now there is a like a 50/50 chance, the odds are getting better,” Tomac told the PulpMX Show on Monday evening. “At the start of the season I was saying 98, 99 [percent] done, but I’m 50/50 now. This time of year, it’s hard to be too happy go lucky, I feel like we are all in the pressure cooker, but in general I have been having a lot of fun these last years as a whole, still having a good time.”
This year’s Supercross season concludes on 13 May in Salt Lake City, with Tomac currently holding a seven-point advantage ahead of Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Chase Sexton (Team Honda HRC) after six rounds. Round seven takes place this Saturday as the series moves east once more to Arlington for what will be the second Triple Crown of the year.
