Tomac regains points lead after splitting race wins with Sexton.
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson took his second round victory of the year at Round 10 of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship at Budds Creek, as championship front-runners Eli Tomac and Chase Sexton split race victories.
Team Honda HRC duo Sexton and Ken Roczen finished second and third overall on the day.
Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing’s Tomac took control of the opening 450MX moto as Sexton faltered with his worst race result so far this season.
Roczen led the field through the first turn, followed by Ryan Dungey (Red Bull KTM) and Justin Barcia (TLD Red Bull KTM).
Points leader Sexton had a horror start to the race with two over-the-bars crashes in the opening laps, while his main rival Tomac quickly dispatched of Dungey and Roczen to take the lead before the midway point of the race.
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson also made moves forward as the heat and humidity rose, dispatching of Aaron Plessinger (Red Bull KTM), Dungey and Roczen to move into second.
Tomac would take a 12-second win over Anderson, with Roczen holding off Dungey for third.
Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing team-mates Christian Craig and Dylan Ferrandis finished fifth and sixth, while Sexton did his best to minimise the points’ damage with a P7 result.
Barcia, Joey Savatgy (Monster Energy Kawasaki) and Plessinger filled the remaining top 10 positions.
Chase Sexton bounced back to claim the victory of a wild second 450MX moto.
Savatgy scored the holeshot, but it was Dungey who quickly jumped into the lead, with Roczen close behind.
The duo diced hard, with Roczen launching past Dungey for P1 on the third lap.
Anderson and Sexton also made short work of Dungey to move into the top three, with Anderson then surging past Roczen for the lead.
Midway through the moto Sexton put in a hard push to head the field, but crashed shortly afterward, shuffling him behind Anderson and Roczen again.
Sexton went back to work and would eventually regain the lead and take a 4.2 second victory from Anderson, who’d claim his second overall win of the year with his 2-2 results.
Roczen and Dungey finished third and fourth, ahead of Tomac, who worked his way from 13th to fifth, despite struggling with a paddle rear tyre on the hardpack conditions.
Savatgy, Craig, Barcia, Plessinger and Fredrik Noren (BBMX KTM) rounded out the top 10.
In the championship standings, Tomac will enter next week’s penultimate round at Ironman IN with a slender one-point lead over Sexton (449 points to 448), with Anderson a further 80 points behind.
The 11th and penultimate round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will be held at Ironman, IN next weekend.
