Advanced Thor helmet infusing style and technology on test.
Words: Caleb Tennant
Performance under pressure, the 2022 Thor MX Reflex helmet has achieved above and beyond at the highest levels of the sport, continuing to deliver an infusion of style and technology that riders can count on. We recently took delivery of one for this latest Tested article.
Immediately adopted by some of the biggest names in racing since its inception two years ago, the Thor Reflex Cast helmet tested boasts a great updated shape with a striking, yet simple black, white and camo color combination that’s suitable to match any gear set.
From a safety point of view, there was never any doubts about quality if I were to ‘crash test’ the Reflex helmet, fitted with MIPS Brain Protection System that provides the added assurance that one of the most crucial and vulnerable parts of the body has extra protection against rotational impact forces – the MIPS reducing forces transmitted to the brain from certain impacts.
The helmet itself fits really well, I usually wear a medium and I was comfortable in this size wearing the Reflex. The fiber-glass composite reinforced shell was light, but really stable on my head while riding, feeling no movement of the helmet bouncing around on-track. Comfort gets a tick from us.
The removable, washable, moisture-wicking, anti-microbial Dryform comfort liner and contoured cheek pads were also comfortable and help keep the Reflex snug and in place when faced with different riding demands. Koroyd technology integrated into the premium dual-density EPS liner was another facet of this helmet that added that extra reassurance of both quality and protection.
Other neat features of the Reflex include a fully adjustable visor – I never actually adjusted this and found the Reflex helmet shape naturally allowed the goggles to fit really well, quick-release pull tabs on the contoured cheek pads, lightweight stainless steel D-rings and a Thor drawstring helmet bag that’s included. Importantly, air-flow is welcomed and achieves what the design team set out to do in terms of cooling.
Overall the current Thor MX Reflex helmet is modern and, as you’d expect, a significant step forward from the brand. Lightweight and protective thanks to a great internal and external design, it ticks all of the essential boxes, with the Reflex cast black/white available at $299.
